Course Description/Objectives: Course
Description/Objectives: This course is
designed to provide students with the opportunity to improve and practice
conversational English and writing. Emphasis will be placed on speaking,
writing, reading, and vocabulary skills. The instructor will employ the
textbook and additional supplementary materials to provide an environment for
English conversation, basic writing skills, and communicative learning.
Primary
Objectives: By the end of the semester, students will be able to:
1.
Learn,
understand and effectively use new vocabulary (see attached list). Ss will be
able to define and use the terms correctly in sentences. Students will also
be able to choose correct vocabulary to complete sentences (fill in blanks)
2.
Grammar points:
Demonstrate their understanding through conversation, speaking and writing.
A. Review: Be able to develop grammatically correct sentences (Subject +
Verb + Object=Sentence).
B. Simple Present /simple past/simple future tense
3.
Hold and carry out conversations
based on the topics from the book. Respond to a given topic (either verbally
or written) in complete sentences and be able to support their answer with at
least 2 reasons.
4.
Write 2-3 sentences on
a given topic/subject with few grammatical and syntax errors.
5.
Listening Comprehension: Students will be able to listen to passages from
the book and other sources and be able to identify and state the main idea.
Students will be able to respond to “Who/what/why/how” questions related to
the listening passage. Students will also be able to answer questions related
to the listening (multiple choice and/or true/false).
6.
Reading comprehension: Students will be able to read passages from the
book and other sources and be able to identify and state the main idea and
supporting points. Students will be able to respond to “Who/what/why/how”
questions related to the reading passage. Students will also be able to
answer questions related to the reading (multiple choice and/or true/false).
7.
***Demonstrate their understanding of
presentations by giving a presentation/speech. (Intonation, delivery,
organization, gestures etc).
****CPHW will hold a presentation competition
during the semester. This will be a class semester project (presentation).
One team (2-3 member team) from each class (based on level—e.g. 1,2,3 etc).
The team that represents the class should be the team with the highest/best
presentation score in the class. The class project/presentation will be used
as the midterm. During weeks 10 and 11 the CPHW presentation competition will
take place. Additional information will be provided.

You are expected to behave appropriately in your class. This means:

Turn off your cellular phone.
·
Pay attention to the teacher.
·
Do not talk when your teacher or your classmates
are talking.
·
Participate in class. If the teacher asks
you a question, try to answer it.
·
Bring your book,
pencil, paper and dictionary to class every day.

Attendance:
It is
university policy that students attend every class. Failure
to attend class will lower a student's final grade. No one can expect to improve their English
if they do not come to class. If a
student is late for class 3 times, it will count as 1 absence. If a student is absent, they MUST talk to their Department Head and obtain an excused absence form. That form must then be
given to the instructor.
HWC Attendance Policy
1) Make sure every student comes to class on time. Attendance should
be checked and recorded by class on Next-Generation Synthesis System
(http://was.wsu.ac.kr).
2) Absences are exempted for the following cases when official
documents are submitted. Other than these seven cases, any other absences are
not excused.
① One day trip or round trip in a day in order to redeem national
obligation
② One day trip or round trip in a day in order to participate in any
events or official tests which are permitted by the President of the Univ.
③ Five days for the loss of a parent
④ Five days for the loss of a grandparent
⑤ Five days on the occasion of the student’s marriage
⑥ One day on the occasion of parent’s 60th birthday
⑦ When hospitalized or an emergency caused by diseases or accidents
3) Over 30 minute tardiness is counted as absence.
4) Three times of tardiness is counted as one absence.
5) Class absence over one-third of the course is graded as F.
6) When a student is out of the classroom without the professor’s
permission, it will be treated as absence.

Attendance = 20%
Homework/Participation and/or Project = 20%
Midterm exam
= 20%
Final exam
= 40%
Grading Distribution Scale (Curving)
This class will use the grade distribution scale
in accordance with the University policy. It is applicable to all freshman,
sophomore and junior classes offered by the Dept. of General English
regardless of class size.
Evaluation
1) Relative evaluation will be practiced along with the level
different classes. The grade rate of HWC students will be noticed and
observed following the school policy.
2) In case the professor found a quite different level gap of a
student in the class, s/he should be moved to an upper level class. When the
student stays in the lower level class than his or her original level, s/he
cannot be given more than score B0.
3) Except for an inevitable situation, the student who is over 10
minutes late for testing will be given score 0.
5) The decision of holdover for low achievement students will be made
in the meeting of English professors after the final term.

This course will have two exams: a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam. The instructor may also
administer quizzes or other assignments at any time during the course. Homework and Participation will be
assessed at the discretion of the instructor as per standard Woosong policy.
|
If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to make up missed class work.
